Modified likelihood ratio test for homogeneity in a mixture of von Mises distributions

چکیده
Directional data are often collected in applications such as in genetics, geology and astrolomy. One particular statistical problem of interest is whether the data are from a mixture of two von Mises distributions or a single von Mises distribution. Motivating examples including a DNA microarray experiment where it is suggested that a proportion of circadian genes have systematically different phase/peak expressions in two different tissues. We study the use of modified likelihood ratio test (MLRT) to this class of problems. The MLRT statistic is shown to have a simple χ1 null limiting distribution. The result is extended to general parametric kernels. The simulation study gives additional insight into the finite-sample performance of the test. For illustration, two real data examples are also given.

Testing homogeneity in a mixture of von Mises distributions with a structural parameter
The modified likelihood ratio test has been successfully applied for the homogeneity test in a variety of mixture models. In this paper, the authors propose the use of the modified likelihood ratio test and the iterative modified likelihood ratio test in general two-component von Mises mixture with a structural parameter. Two accuracy enhancing methods are developed. The limiting distributions ...
متن کاملModelling Circular Data Using a Mixture of Von Mises and Uniform Distributions
The von Mises distribution is often useful for modelling circular data problems. We consider a model for which von Mises data is contaminated with a certain proportion of points uniformly distributed around the circle. Maximum likelihood estimation is used to produce parameter estimates for this mixture model. Computational issues involved with obtaining the maximum likelihood estimates for the...
متن کاملA likelihood ratio test for bimodality in two-component mixtures – with application to regional income distribution in the EU
We propose a parametric test for bimodality based on the likelihood principle by using two-component mixtures. The test uses explicit characterizations of the modal structure of such mixtures in terms of their parameters. Examples include the univariate and multivariate normal distributions and the von Mises distribution. The asymptotic distribution of the proposed test is presented, and its fi...
متن کاملEvaluation of estimation methods for parameters of the probability functions in tree diameter distribution modeling
One of the most commonly used statistical models for characterizing the variations of tree diameter at breast height is Weibull distribution. The usual approach for estimating parameters of a statistical model is the maximum likelihood estimation (likelihood method). Usually, this works based on iterative algorithms such as Newton-Raphson. However, the efficiency of the likelihood method is not...
متن کاملLikelihood Ratio Test for Homogeneity in Normal Mixtures in the Presence of a Structural Parameter
This paper investigates the asymptotic properties of the likelihood ratio statistic for testing homogeneity in normal mixture models in the presence of a structural parameter. The asymptotic null distributions of the ordinary likelihood ratio statistic and the modified likelihood ratio statistic are the same, having the probability density function(pdf) (1/2)g1(x)+(1/2)g2(x) where g1(x) and g2(...
